Keyword Research in the most important part of Search Engine Optimization. Think of it as the foundation of your project. Without a strong foundation, your website success will crumble.
It does you no good to Show Up On Google Search Results for keywords that nobody is searching for or for keywords where there is so much competition that your site will never be found.
You absolutely need to know:
1) what your potential customers are typing into Google search boxes
2) how much competition there is for each of those keywords
By doing the appropriate research, you will be in a position to decide on keywords with the least amount of competition that have the most amount of searches. This will give you the strong foundation that you need in order to succeed.
